An eco-friendly exhibition

At the Art Center of Sarasota, the theme is "Green" for the latest gallery-wide exhibition.

Suzanne White, curator for the South Florida Museum, has gathered a collection of works from Florida artists that boast the bounty of the beauty found in this sunny Southern state. The exhibition will run from July 14 to Sept. 12.

In Gallery 4 (Main Gallery), "Green: The Primary Color," a juried exhibition for all media, was open to artists residing in Florida year-round who wished to submit work exploring and celebrating the Florida environment. With $1,000 in prize money, this exhibition’s jurors are be Nancy Hellebrand and Patrick Fiore.

The Gallery 1 (Front gallery) exhibition, "Seeing Florida: Florida Environmental Artists," features 24 Florida artists exploring an exotic paradise brimming with biodiversity which is facing overdevelopment, diminishing water supplies, pollution, and violent storms. The artists featured are Clyde Butcher, John Penrod, Gary Borse, Mollie Doctrow and Maria Saceno.

"Chorus Line" by Gary Borse.

Gallery 2 offers works of Chris Lundy, a Sarasota native who lives in and works in Hawaii.

According to Surfline.com, "Chris Lundy isn’t your average surf artist -- he’s known as much for his surfing ability in super heavy waves as his design aesthetic... His lush, crazy, psychedelic wavescapes have become a trademark and he’s done more surf event posters than anyone on the planet."

"Next Stop" by Chris Lundy.

Florida environmental art will combine with Japanese culture in the exhibition: "Sarasota Sumi-e Society" in Gallery 3. Sumi-e painters use an ink and wash technique that requires great skill and concentration. Forms found in nature are expressed in ink freely, yet with a controlled brushstroke that, once painted, cannot be changed.

An opening reception will be held July 16 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Art Center Sarasota is located at 707 N. Tamiami Trail. For more information, call 365-2032 or visit www.artsarasota.org
